What is the DAX Performance Index?

The DAX Performance Index, also known as the DAX 40 or simply DAX, constitutes the primary economic barometer of Germany. Created in 1988 by the Deutsche Börse, this flagship index comprises the 40 largest German companies listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in terms of market capitalization and liquidity.

In contrast to other European indices like the CAC 40, the DAX Performance Index has a unique feature: it automatically integrates dividends paid by the companies, thus offering a complete view of the total return on investments. This "Total Return" approach partly explains why the DAX often shows historically superior performance compared to comparable indices.

💡 Did you know? The DAX started with a base value of 1,000 points on December 31, 1987. Today, it fluctuates around 24,000 points, representing a multiplication by 24 in less than 40 years!

The Two Versions of DAX: TR vs PR

There are actually two main versions of the DAX that should be distinguished:

  • DAX TR (Total Return) - ISIN: DE0008469008: The most commonly used version, including reinvested dividends
  • DAX PR (Price Return) - ISIN: DE0008467440: Similar to the CAC 40, without reinvestment of dividends

This distinction is crucial for investors as it significantly impacts long-term performance comparisons.
